How to Choose the Right Fire Extinguisher for Your Workplace

A straightforward guide to matching extinguisher types to workplace fire risks, from offices and workshops to kitchens and plant rooms.

Choosing an extinguisher should start with the fire risks on site, not with whatever cylinder is easiest to buy. Fire and Emergency New Zealand recommends first-aid firefighting equipment in commercial premises, and the Health and Safety at Work Act requires PCBUs to eliminate risks so far as reasonably practicable or, if that is not possible, minimise them.

Match the extinguisher to the hazard

For mixed-risk workplaces, ABE dry powder is often the broadest starting point because it is used across ordinary combustibles, flammable liquids, and live electrical risks. That does not make it the answer for every room.

Use CO2 where clean discharge matters

Electrical switch rooms, server spaces, and similar areas often need CO2 because residue from powder can create extra damage and downtime after the incident.

Use wet chemical in commercial kitchens

Deep fryers and cooking oils need a kitchen-appropriate extinguisher strategy. Where the fuel source changes, the extinguisher type should change as well.

Placement and training still matter

An appropriate extinguisher is only useful if staff can reach it safely, recognise what it is for, and know when not to use it. That is why site layout, signage, servicing, and basic worker instruction should be treated as one package.
